Why do Catholics Celebrate the May Crowning?
A longstanding Catholic tradition, the May Crowning of Mary honors the Virgin Mary. A “May Crowning” is typically held, where Mary is presented with a floral crown and other handmade items. With this information, teach your child about the origins of this beautiful Catholic tradition.
Historical Traditions
Throughout history, Catholics have long honored the Blessed Virgin Mary during the month of May. To symbolize her significance in the Church and in our lives, the “May Crowning” is set up to display her queenship as the mother of Jesus. Catholic churches typically create a dedicated area to place a picture or statue of Mary, which is surrounded by flowers and candles. This tribute remains up throughout the entire month in order to memorialize the importance of our Mother Mary in Church and in our personal lives.
Specific Month
Catholics have long honored Mary in May with special observances, traditions, and devotions. This devotion led her to be known as the “Queen of May.” May being observed as a dedication is linked back to early Greece when ancient Greeks dedicated the month to Artemis, the goddess of fecundity. In medieval times, winter ended at the start of May because it was considered a time of new growth and beginnings. During this time, the “Tricesimum” (“30-Day Devotion to Mary” or “Lady Month”) period began, when special devotions to the Mother of God started in May. It spread from Italy all around the world. Parishes traditionally have a daily recitation of the Rosary during this month. The structure or image of Mary is taken back into the church during the final devotion on the last day of May, which is followed by a procession.
Our Mother
Note that we do not view Mary as a goddess, nor do we worship Mary; she is honored or venerated as the mother of Christ, the most important woman in our Catholic faith. Mary is offered through pilgrimages, sacrifices, visits to church, and other customs as our Mother. She gave birth to that Body, making her our own mother; thus giving birth to us spiritually.
